Able Seaman Duties
The able seaman is a common maritime role which can be found on almost any type of vessel.

The majority of the active crew on-board a ship will be made up of able seamen, whose responsibility it is to perform many of the daily tasks and jobs needed to keep a vessel running and in good order. The able seamen will work both above and below deck, performing maintenance tasks and handling the ship’s operations. Able seamen may be found employed on a range of vessels, from supply ships to tankers and cruise ships.

Equipment Handling
The able seaman, together with his colleagues of the same rank, is responsible for all the line handling that takes place on-board his ship, which includes preparing the ship for docking and departing port, as well as creating tows for tugs and organizing the rigging needed to haul cargo to and from the ship once at port. The able seamen will break all of this gear out, and will stow it all away again once it’s no longer needed.

Navigation
An able seaman is not likely to be in charge of the course of his ship, but he will steer the vessel under the command of the ship’s commander or another officer, as noted by the Ocean Careers website. At other times, an able seaman will simply be responsible for checking that the ship is maintaining its correct course by testing the ship’s direction with a compass.
The able seaman will look out for other ships nearby; if another ship is getting too close, the able seaman can communicate with that vessel using a range of naval signals, delivered by blinker lights or other devices, to avoid accidents. Away from the wheel, an able seaman might also be found watching the sea from the bow of the ship, in order to deliver advance warning to colleagues if any potential hazards appear.

Maintenance
A ship must be kept running smoothly, and often, it is the able seamen who do the dirty jobs on-board, which might involve cleaning the decks or giving surfaces a fresh coat of paint once in a while. Both the interior and the exterior of the vessel will require washing and checking for potential health and safety risks, which will require fixing immediately.
Another task for able seamen is to check for the appearance of rust on-board ship and, if found, to chip away at it to remove it. In some cases,  the able seaman may supervise other members of the ship’s crew in maintenance and cleaning tasks.
