ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS EDUCATION

Full-time Tenure Track

The Department of Sciences and Mathematics of California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education beginning August 2022. We seek a collegial, dynamic educator committed to creating an environment of active student learning while engaging in scholarly activity and service in accordance with the mission and goals of the Department and University. This individual will teach a variety of undergraduate math courses to students in our six degree granting majors as well as in service of our math minor degree program. In particular, we seek an expert in mathematics education to take a leadership role in developing programs to help students under-prepared for university math coursework.

 ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime):   Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus California State University (CSU) system.  Serving a population of approximately 1100 undergraduate and 50 graduate students, we are one of only seven degree-granting maritime academies in the United States — and the only one on the West Coast.  

Cal Maritime offers six baccalaureate degrees in Business Administration, Global Studies and Maritime Affairs (GSMA), Facilities Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, and Marine Transportation.  ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF SCIENCES AND MATHEMATICS: Our department is a collegial group of 17 faculty members – 6 tenured, 5 tenure-track, and 6 adjunct.  We offer lower division, foundational science and math courses for students majoring in baccalaureate degrees noted above.  We also offer a Mathematics minor as well as a minor in Marine Science.

 MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Full-time (12 units/semester) teaching of a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses. During the first two years of teaching, the teaching load is reduced to 9 units/semester.
  • Lead a program of course design/redesign to address the needs of under-prepared students.
  • Maintain an effective program of scholarship.
  • Provide service to the campus community outside of the classroom.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or Mathematics, or an official notification of completion of the doctoral degree before August 2022.
  • An ability to teach a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses is required.
  • An ongoing program of scholarship and a willingness to serve the campus-at-large through committee work is also required.

 DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants demonstrating expertise or experience in serving under-prepared students will be given preference.
  • A genuine passion for teaching, scholarship and service is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge of innovative and effective classroom teaching methods will also be appreciated.

 SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensurate with the education, qualifications and experience of the individual.

  • Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access.
