Purpose of the Position
Required to perform duties in support of NASA Barge Pegasus operations, maintenance and movements. Must meet requirements established in Task Order SOW for various marine certifications and experience.Company Conformance Statement

Duties and Responsibilities
Ordinary Seaman to work with crew members to maintain the NASA barge Pegasus in a state of readiness for movement of space flight hardware. Perform work as directed by the Marine Operations Manager and assist the vessel engineer as requested. Job includes pulling and handling heavy lines, wires, and hoses; working with sensitive and critical cargo; making up and releasing tow from assist tugs, good communication skills both verbal and hand signals with assist tugs; watch standing; general vessel maintenance; and other tasks that may be assigned to carry out. Completes daily job assignments, duties and reports on the status of work assignments; contributes to the organization and storage of inspection, maintenance, and repair records in both electronic and hard copy format. Reporting to the Marine Operations Manager, essential job functions and duties include but are not limited to the following:- Take direction from AB and/or Marine Operations Manager
- Assist in ensuring the vessel exceeds all Federal and NASA requirements and standards
- Make up tows as directed by the AB and tug captains
- Handel heavy mooring lines and properly tie off the barge
- Make up and handle heaving and messenger lines
- Capable of working heavy windless and capstan equipment
- Knot tying and rope/wire splicing a plus
- Give proper direction and distance signals and information
- Proper use of a VHF radio
- Carry out vessel and equipment maintenance, cleaning and painting
- Request purchasing through the Marine Operations Manager
- Advises Marine Operations Manager of corrective actions and prevention of risks regarding health and safety, environmental and quality.
- Assist in preparation for USACE and ABS inspections
- Assist with scheduled haul outs and ship yard support
- Assist in maintaining all vessel safety equipment in compliance of all Federal and NASA regulations
- General cooking and galley duties
- Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to standing underway watch
Requirements:
- Must pass Federal and NASA background check and obtain a NASA security badge, drug screen and physical
- Must obtain within the first six months a MMC, USCG Licensed Ordinary Seaman or higher, minimum BST.
- Working knowledge of barge handling and making up tows; vessel maintenance; vessel systems is a plus.
- Must be able to get along with others in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time
- Must live within two hours distance to the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans LA
- Travel will be required
- Candidates who, in addition to the above, possess specialized skills such as fitting, welding, equipment operating, and cooking will be given strong consideration
Working Conditions
- Physical effort involving able average standing, sitting, walking or detail work.
- Occasional risk of injury due to hazards.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Dexterity to operate office equipment as required by the position.

Other Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.
- Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.
- Must have, and maintain, a valid driver’s license.
