This unique maritime educator position includes leading a half-day morning program at the Port Townsend Maritime Academy—a satellite of West Sound Technical Skills Center—located at the Northwest Maritime Center in downtown Port Townsend. In the afternoon the role involves teaching hands-on, industry-aligned courses at Port Townsend High School in our on-campus shop, using tools and machinery representative of those found in maritime and related trades.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Washington State teaching certificate and CTE certification is required. USCG Captain’s license preferred or equivalent experience.
- Successful secondary teaching experience and commitment to addressing the developmental needs of high school students;
- Demonstrated knowledge of broad range of curriculum and teaching styles;
- Demonstrated skill in maritime trades education is highly desirable;
- Demonstrated successful instructional skills in a variety of teaching techniques commensurate with diverse learning styles and abilities;
- Demonstrated ability to adapt school district curriculum to meet students' individual needs;
- Demonstrated experience in long and short-range planning for student and program needs;
- Demonstrated desire to foster and promote a positive, cooperative educational environment;
- Demonstrated excellence in communication and organizational skills;
- Demonstrated willingness in planning and teaching curriculum as part of a team, to share staff responsibilities and be flexible, to supervise clubs and/or activities;
- Demonstrated ability to write student learning outcomes, design instructional lessons, and assess the student performance in ways which successfully teach and measure district curricula as well as CTE performance standards;

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Northwest Maritime Academy Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with PTHS, West Sound Technical Skills Center, and the Northwest Maritime Center. Collaborate with NWMC instructors to ensure operational success. Be responsive and willing to collaborate with all NWMC policies and procedures in order to provide a safe program.
- Complete all required CTE program paperwork in a timely manner.
- Implement a Maritime Trades program that is designed to achieve school improvement goals and state CTE standards, and is consistent with preparatory program requirements, and dual credit articulations.
- Able to work on the water and train students on water-based apparatus (boats, survival suits, etc.) in a safe manner.
- Maintain a safe and orderly shop environment. Train students on safe and appropriate tool use. Perform tool maintenance as needed.
- Serve as the primary liaison with sending schools to coordinate onboarding and manage student paperwork required by Port Townsend School District and West Sound Technical Skills Center.
- Request student 504 and IEP documents from WST Special Education services and ensure appropriate accommodations are in place.
- Share required modifications and accommodations from student 504s and IEPs with Northwest Maritime Center staff, following the agreed-upon communication process.
- Deliver instruction primarily at the Northwest Maritime Center, the designated campus for the Port Townsend Maritime Academy.
- Collaborate with West Sound Skills Center, Port Townsend High School, and Northwest Maritime Center staff as part of a three-agency instructional team.
- Work in partnership with the NWM Program Manager, who serves as the main point of contact for resource coordination, calendar development, and evaluation collaboration.
- Communicate weekly with NWM staff during a designated 50-minute meeting time to ensure program alignment; determine this meeting time collaboratively prior to each semester.
- Remain available for brief or emergency meetings outside the weekly meeting time to support effective program operation.
- Supervise student behavior and maintain a safe and productive learning environment during all school-day and school-sponsored PTMA activities.
- The CTE Teacher will provide NWM staff with the planned Learning Outcomes for on-water instruction.
Port Townsend High School Campus Responsibilities
- Lead advisory council meetings for the high school maritime program.
- Provide assistance and guidance to meet the needs of all students.
- Develop and modify instructional programs to meet individual student needs.
- Develop effective positive teaching techniques for improving student behavior and maintain order appropriate to a productive learning environment.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding student learning and behavior.
- Maintain student records including attendance, daily grades, homework hotline, voicemail, and others as required.
- Collaborate with Special Education staff to meet the needs of identified students.
- Participate, when requested, in CARE meetings with teachers, administrators and specialists, to support individual students and their educational needs.
- Participate in both short- and long-term instructional planning which will include writing daily lesson plans.
- Maintain materials and equipment including submitting timely orders and inventories as required.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and work collaboratively with all staff.
- Promote and support a positive school environment in both programs.
- Enforce school rules and monitor student behavior in non-classroom settings.
- Other school/program related duties as assigned by the supervising principal and CTE Directors.

Salary Range: Depending on Experience; 2025-26 Salary Range is $61,500 - $119,584 annually for a 1.0 FTE teacher.
