Description

Assisting with the coordination of all academic activities relating to, but not limited to:



  • Bachelor of Marine Engineering

  • Teaching & learning

  • Curriculum development,

  • Academic development,

  • Academic administration,

  • Conducting research,

  • Participation in SAMSA/EMSA/CHE or any other accreditation,

  • Participation in Quality Assurance activities,

  • Participation in Industry Advisory Committees & partnerships,

  • Personal & professional development,

  • Assisting with WIL and planning of service-learning initiatives,

  • Assisting with recruitment, admissions & marketing as is reasonably required by the HoD: Maritime Studies & Survival Centre.

  • Familiarising and incorporating utilisation of the onsite Simulator in training programs



Requirements

Lecturer:



  • Masters in either Maritime Studies/Nautical Science/Maritime Law or equivalent. All underpinning qualifications must be in either Maritime Studies/Nautical Science/Maritime Law or equivalent

  • At least 2-years relevant teaching experience in higher education and/or 2-years industrial experience in Maritime.

  • Seagoing Certificate of Competency Class 1 or Class 2 or OOW A minimum of 12 months’ sea time after the date of issue of the COC, in rank as Chief Mate.


Recommendation:



  • A registration with a relevant professional body is recommended.

  • Progress made towards a Doctorate in Maritime Studies/Nautical Science/Maritime Law.

  • Demonstrable ability to carry out research as evidenced by publications in accredited journal.


Junior Lecturer:



  • A Postgraduate Diploma in Maritime Studies /Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Honours) /PG Dip/ NHD /BTech degree in Maritime Studies/Nautical Science/Maritime Law or equivalent.

  • Seagoing Certificate of Competency Class 1 or Class 2 or OOW. A minimum of 12 months’ sea time after the date of issue of the CoC.


Recommendation:



  • Relevant teaching experience in higher education and/or industrial experience in Maritime.

  • A registration with a relevant professional body is recommended.

  • Progress made towards a Masters in Maritime Studies/Nautical Science/Maritime Law or equivalent will be an advantage

  • Demonstrable ability to carry out research as evidenced by a publication in accredited journal


Important notes:



  • Preference will be given to an appointment at the higher level.

  • Successful applicants for the Lecturer post to commit to studying towards and completing a Doctorate within 5 years of appointment

  • Successful applicants for the Junior Lecturer post to commit to studying towards and completing a cognate Masters within 4 years of appointment and a Doctorate within 5 years of obtaining the Masters.
